7/100 World Cup Soccer

Only few will probably ever even see this trophy let alone, win one.

This weekend will be the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The world cup being an event between 32 national futbol (soccer) teams over the next month.

I am probably the most invested in it this year, then I ever have, because I have become quite the soccer person in the last few years. I've always loved soccer, but usually played over watching games.

The first stage is called the group stage, where the 32 teams are broken down into groups of 4 and each team will play the other 3 in each group. This could be where a lot of people get lost, because they are not seeing direct advancement like in football.

The top 2 teams from each group then enter a bracketed style competition until you figure out who will play for the world cup. Unlike american football there is even a 3rd place game. I know that doesn't sound huge to most people, but I'm ready to watch some soccer.

This year the competition will be played in South Africa, and America has a chance to make it out of the group stage, which I believe would be the best America has done. They will have some stiff competition though having to go up against England in their first game.

Spain is probably the most favored team to win, but Italy is defiently trying to make a push for a repeat world cup win, which hasn't been done in a long, long time. I had to put that extra long in there, because the world cup is only every 4 years.
